THE Metolong community received a shot in the arm from Chinese firm Sinohydro Corporation Limited who donated blankets and clothes to sixty vulnerable families in the area this week.
Sinohydro Corporation Limited was awarded the tender for the construction of Metolong Dam and Raw water pump station by the Metolong Authority in 2012. The dam is key to meeting the domestic and industrial water requirements of Maseru City and the neighboring towns of Mazenod, Morija, Roma and Teyateyaneng.
Sinohydro Acting Project Manager Li Shixiong said the company was moved by the plight of the families to make a positive impact in their lives. He said the company also wanted to reciprocate the support they had received from the community during the dam construction.
“The families that received goods today are the most vulnerable and were identified by the chief and community councilor. It was only right that we give back,” Mr Shixiong said during the handover ceremony at Metolong Primary School.
“We donated to 20 families each in three villages and that adds up to a total of 60 families,” Mr Shixiong said, adding that they had never forgotten the warm reception the community gave them on their arrival five years ago.
“The local community welcomed us and we worked very well together. That is one of the reasons why we are giving back. They were behind us all the way until the completion of the dam,” Mr Shixiong said.
He also said they would assist in improving education in the area by donating a printer and computer to Metolong Primary School.
A community councilor Mr Pentše expressed gratitude for the good gesture, adding that the company would be blessed as it stated in the Bible.
“I thank the company on behalf of the beneficiaries. This is a huge gesture and we appreciate your generosity,” Mr Pentše said.
He also implored the rest of the community to rejoice with the recipients as it would have been impossible for the company to donate to everyone.
