THE Basotho Enterprises Development Corporation (BEDCO), Revenue Services Lesotho (RSL) and Standard Lesotho Bank (SLB) have jointly launched the 2025 Bacha Entrepreneurship Project (BEP), a collaborative initiative aimed at empowering unemployed youth in Lesotho to become entrepreneurs and job creators.
Since its inception in 2014, the project has invested over M10 million, supported 33 youth-led businesses and created 184 employment opportunities, demonstrating the transformative power of entrepreneurship in driving sustainable development and economic growth.
SLB’s Marketing Manager for Communications and Sponsorships, Manyathela Kheleli, said BEP continued to play a pivotal role in creating opportunities and driving positive change for aspiring entrepreneurs.
Mr Kheleli said the initiative had been a cornerstone of the bank’s commitment to fostering innovation, empowerment, and economic growth.
“In this year’s phase of the project, we are proud to announce that we will be selecting and funding five aspiring entrepreneurs, providing them with a total of M1.4 million in financial support. This represents a significant opportunity for talented individuals with innovative ideas to turn their dreams into reality and make a positive impact on our society,” Mr Kheleli said.
He further invited young people from all sectors to participate.
“As we embark on this new chapter, I am thrilled to announce that the Call for Proposals is now open to all industries. Whether you’re passionate about technology, tourism, agriculture, or any other sector, we invite you to submit your innovative ideas and bold initiatives. This is your chance to turn your vision into reality, unleash your creativity, and contribute to the vibrant tapestry of our economy.”
He reaffirmed their commitment to reducing youth unemployment and promoting a culture of entrepreneurship.
“As we launch the Call for Proposals for the Bacha Entrepreneurship Project 2025, we reaffirm our commitment to eliminating youth unemployment and promoting a culture of entrepreneurship in our society. We believe that by investing in our youth and nurturing their entrepreneurial spirit, we can unlock untapped potential and drive sustainable growth for generations to come.”
Mr Kheleli said BEP was more than just a funding initiative but a platform for collaboration, mentorship, and growth.
“Through this initiative, we aim to empower entrepreneurs, nurture talent, and build a more inclusive and prosperous society for all. As we embark on this journey together, let us remember that with determination, resilience, and unwavering commitment, we can overcome any obstacle and achieve greatness.”
The RSL’s Head of Strategic Partnerships and Public Relations, Pheello Mphana, reinforced the organisation’s commitment to fostering innovation and business development as a pathway to national prosperity.
Mr Mphana described BEP as more than just a project. He said it was a shared commitment to building a more inclusive, dynamic, and resilient economy through youth empowerment.
“Our core mission is to mobilise revenue for national development, but we understand that revenue does not grow in isolation. It is cultivated in fertile ground where innovation thrives, businesses grow, and entrepreneurship is nurtured,” Mr Mphana said.
“That is why we are proud to partner with Standard Lesotho Bank and BEDCO in this bold and forward-thinking Corporate Social Investment initiative. With this project, we are providing seed funding to ambitious young entrepreneurs with viable business ideas. But just as important, it will offer mentorship, training, and ongoing support because launching a business is not just about capital; it is also about capacity and confidence.”
Mr Mphana acknowledged the creativity and potential of Lesotho’s youth.
“Our youth are brimming with ideas and the hunger to build something meaningful. Yet too often, they are held back by a lack of access to funding, to skills, and to networks. Today, we invest not only in businesses, but in dreams.”
He reaffirmed RSL’s dedication to unlocking the potential of young people as key drivers of economic change and job creation.
“As RSL, we believe that public-private partnerships, when driven by shared values and national priorities, can transform challenges into opportunities. This project is proof of that belief. It shows what is possible when institutions come together with a common purpose to uplift, empower, and build.”
“To the young people here and across the country: this is your moment. Step forward with courage, bring your ideas to life, and know that you are not alone. We are walking this journey with you, as partners in purpose and progress.”
For her part, BEDCO Senior Manager for Public Relations, Communications, Marketing and Stakeholder Relations, ‘Mamahapela Mokuoane, shared the inspiring story behind this impactful partnership.
“This project shows our shared commitment to supporting young people and building a strong culture of entrepreneurship in Lesotho. It is a powerful demonstration of what public-private partnerships can achieve in creating opportunities for our youth,” Ms Mokuoane said.
Youth aged between 21 and 35 are encouraged to submit their proposals to bacha@bedco.org.ls by 24 July 2025.
